Was Scandinavia a civilization back in the day? I don't think it was one area with the same culture. And Sparta is part of Greece. Sparta was only part of Greece after it was taken over I believe. It was always part of the Greek area. There never was a Greek nation (at least not back then). Sparta was as Greek as Athene..

Voted Rome, Greece, Egypt, and Maya. Rome and Greece are definitely my two favorite of all of them though. And some of the Asian groups are cool too.

I posted this in the politics thread, but it probably works better as a history question. Starwarrior247 said: Oh, wait, this could be a good one. Biggest impact on society today Most important Biggest role in history FDR Reason: Passed Social Security and other important reforms/policies that still exist and effect society today. Yeah, I think FDR was extremely important for us in the 20 century. He got us through the Great Depression, did Social Security and the Banks. He also helped us with most of WWII. That's pretty important. And the fact that he was helping millions unemployed Americans was astronomical.

I think my top 5 biggest people of the 20 century would be:
FDR - got America through the Depression and helped America with most of WWII. Also did social security and helped with the banks. He basically got America back on its feet after the crash and during war times as well.
Henry Ford - huge impact on society today. Was creator of major car industry and automobile parts. Was so popular, Americans even thought he could end WWI. His cars are still big today.
Hitler - do I really need to explain myself here? I mean, WWII, Nazis, and genocide should be enough for that.
Gandhi - huge impact in India. Lead nonviolent revolts that gained independence and more rights. Stopped British. Even inspired MLK Jr.
Einstein - I guess you can include him. He did a lot with science and was a huge asset for the A bomb and many other advancements.
TR, Stalin, JFK, and MLK Jr. would he honorable mentions alongside many others that I'm probably blanking out on right now.

World War 2 had a huge impact on our current society... everything changed after WW2 Yeah, but there's a lot that changed society in the 20 century besides WWII. Take the Great Depression or civil rights movements. Or even the breaking up of empires and dynasties after WWI. Those were huge as well.

Wow there hasn't been a post on this thread for a long time. Well last week in my history class I was given a topic to write about in the 20th century, I was given Appeasement & I had to argue for or against it, and I argued in favour. I raised the following points:
- The British (& many European) people wanted peace.
- Many of Hitler's demands were reasonable at the time - especially about the Treaty of Versailles.
- Germany could serve as a barrier against expansion by Stalinist Russia.
- Britain's and France's armed forces were not ready for a war, and they could not have helped Czechoslovakia anyway.
- The slaughter of the First World War; another war had the potential to destroy countless nations.
- Hitler had made it clear that he only intended the lands in the East to be annexed in order to fulfil his goal in obtaining Lebensraum, would it matter much if the Baltic States and Poland disappeared from the map? It may sound somewhat cold but risking millions of lives just over some little dispute is absurd. As Chamberlain said:
"How horrible, fantastic, incredible it is, that we should be digging trenches and trying on gas-masks here, because of a quarrel in a faraway country between people of whom we know nothing...
However much we may sympathise with a small nation confronted by a big and powerful neighbour, we cannot in all circumstances undertake to involve the whole British Empire in war simply on her account. If we have to fight, it must be on larger issues than that. I am myself a man of peace to the depths of my soul; armed conflict between nations is a nightmare to me... War is a fearful thing, and we must be very clear before we embark on it, that it is really the great issues that are at stake."
- The state of the economies of Britain and France (and other nations) were in such a precarious state that a war would ruin them even further, even in the case of victory.
So what do you all think about appeasement? Good thing? Bad thing? Or somewhere in between?
