There is an university 20 kilometers from where I live, but it is a technical one, which means it only has technical studies... so not useful for me. There is another one slightly closer than the one I go to, but it didn't have any studies I really wanted to do either. So the closest university that has history is the one I go to now. There are only 8 full universities (not technical ones) in the Netherlands, so yes... the chances that you have to travel a lot are pretty high. And I actually only have to be in the train for one hour, but I have to cycle about 20 minutes to the train station and then I have to take the bus to university from Utrecht's train station which currently takes 30 minutes (normally 15, but they are working on the roads). But it is pretty normal to travel that much to university here... And attendance used to be optional, when my father studied at university (he's the only other person in my family who did) he didn't have to come to any colleges but now the right-wing government is totally obsessed with decreasing government spending on education, so they force university to be stricter so they don't have to help people financially who won't come to every lesson. And I don't think you will actually be kicked out, it seems more like a way of scaring us. One of my teachers said that if you get a 0 for a subject because of absence you will have to redo the subject next year... which means you have lots of work to do next year, especially if it happens for more than one subject. But yeah, its stupid that they regulate stuff this way... Well I guess in like competitive courses where you need certain grades and not everyone gets in forcing attendance is probably a good thing since you're taking away from someone else however if it's not competitive it isn't really needed IMO. Here for university most people just relocate to be near the university Everyone with the proper secondary education gets into university here. There are some really popular studies where they can only allow a certain amount people, but those are mainly medical studies... so that doesn't apply to me. And quite a lot of people move to the city where their university is here too. But I don't really feel like doing that... besides since the government only borrows money instead of giving you money for your study now if you want to move to the city where you study you will probably end up with huge debts... so yeah, even more people are traveling between their home city and university now.

Yeah medical studies are usually competitive however some of them have pretty laughable high school course requirements that even myself who will probably not attend university has higher requirements then the people in the course. Like Nursing for example is pretty low but competitive. Everyone who finishes high school here can get into some sort of post secondary however a lot of courses have higher requirements and some University's need a certain high school average just to apply

But all universities have high requirements, and they can not discriminate against anyone that meets them, so they randomly pick people in these "competitive studies". And yes, everyone can get into post-secondary education here... especially since finishing high school is pretty much mandatory here. But only if you finish high school at the highest level (VWO) you are allowed to go to university. So because only like 10% of the people finish at VWO level there are very few universities, while schools for other post-secondary education are much more common.

You can do some university courses here without being at the highest level like nursing howeve most require pretty high requirements. I'm most likely going to trade school but what I'm interested in still requires chemistry and high math.

Well, just because someone got higher grades in high school doesn't mean they will do better in university. Perhaps someone studied all day just to get those grades, then they would not do too well. Or perhaps someone got decent grades with no effort, which means he has lots of potential. Besides, high school is very different than university... Universities in Europe only teach sciences. Like, nursing isn't a science, it's something practical, so you can't do it at university here.

Going to university hours away sounds bad lol Well, I knew that when I decided to go there... and it's not like I have another option in terms of distance. But that isn't the worst part. Just sitting in the train for an hour isn't too bad... and I only have 6 lessons (of about 1:45 each) every week so I still spend less time at university (including travel times) than I did last year at school. But the study isn't what I expected... scientific history is boring and the more I learn about it to more I start to realize that I could be doing other more useful sciences in which I could actually discover something new.

So if your really sure you don't like it anymore. Go look up some other stuff

Well, I don't think I can switch but if I quit my study before January it won't cost anything... but if I complete the first year I will be allowed to do the second year of any study at university, assuming I meet the secondary education requirements (I couldn't do physics for example because I never took the subject in secondary education), so I might just try to do that. And a politician wouldn't work too well probably. I don't think I have the speaking and debating skills required to be a politician... maybe I could work for a political party as program writer or speech writer though

I also have no idea what kind of job I want... there aren't any concrete jobs you can get with most social university studies... so I'm thinking maybe I should continue my history study and get an education minor in the 3rd year so I can always try becoming a teacher if I can't find anything else.

Got a 7,4 for my first exam Pretty good considering 36/160 people scored too low to even be allowed to do a resit... some even scored a 0 (I didn't even know that was possible ). Well, now I wait for the results of the other exam... and if I got a proper grade for that I will have two weeks to do nothing at all

Even if you didn't do the asianged task (like answer the question).

There is a list with all grades (without names, due to privacy reasons) and apparently 261 people were supposed to do the exam... and only 28 scored higher than a 7,4... so yeah I'm pretty happy with my score You don't get any marks for grammar or spelling, you can only lose marks if you make spelling mistakes. But I guess maybe they just saw the exam and gave up instantly... or the teachers couldn't read their handwriting... or maybe they give you a 0 even if you got some questions right... still it's kind of weird... and they definitely took part in the exam... some even scored a 0,1 or 0,3... even without studying you should be able to score higher than that...

I love how much vacation I have at university. So I have Christmas vacation until the 4th of January, then I have lessons from the 4th to the 8th, then I have two weeks for exams (one exam per week, no lessons) then if I pass my exams I have the week after that off, and then the week after that I have another week of "Krokus vacation" (some kind of northern vacation thing, in the south where I live we have something else). So that's only one week of lessons from now until the 8th of February
