Yeah, I've been done with school since Wednesday. I just need to come in on Monday to get summer work and then it's officially summer for me. And I don't go back til after Labor Day (Sept. 8). Why do you have so much vacation? And summer work? Isn't yours just as long? And yeah, there's gonna be English, Math, History, and Science. Maybe Spanish too, I'm not sure. But it's usually not too bad, just the math can be a lot at times and the English reading can be tedious (especially when last summer we had to read books like Fast Food Nation and The Bell Jar). They make me not enjoy reading as much, because normally I love to. But it's never terrible IMO, cause I don't wait til the last week of break to do it all

Although at secondary school you are done after your last tests of the year an all you have to do in the last week of school is get your report and turn in your books. So we actually have an extra week of vacation there. So 7 or 8 weeks. Only this year I was in my final year so we had our exams and those are always in May and since the entire secondary education system here is centered around those exams when you are done with them you are done with school. And since the school year at university only starts on September the 1st (even though most of them have an introduction week before that) this year my vacation lasts 3 months, so twice as long as usual

There is more than a month between July the 24th and September the 3rd. It's only 10 days more than a month. But I still think that he should have a longer break than that considering I've always had roughly 3 months of summer every year I've been in school. I mean, with a summer break that short, why not just have a year-round school? Honestly, that would make more sense than having about 40 days off and calling it your summer break. Do all education systems in Europe have it like this or just a few?

North-americans just have a ridiculously long summer vacation...

So, at university I'm only allowed to be absent for valid reason a maximum of two times per subject... but today when I was traveling towards Utrecht (where my university is) they got some issues with the train wiring in Utrecht and I was trapped in a train 8 kilometers from the station, only to be brought back to the nearest major city about an hour later... Pretty much the entire Dutch rail system went down today, because Utrecht is where all rails connect... and they would only fix this issue at 4:00 AM tonight... but I still get a warning for being absent

But they will still make you absent ... However I only got attendance in the morning now since I got like private classes in the afternoon

And if you have to travel 2 hours and don't have a car a train is the only option. And if they suddenly decide to stop the train for an hour (with you still in it) there is nothing you can do really.

Why are you traveling so far? Was that like the closest university? And what about the winter if you get snow or something?? It sounds like you might be in a bad spot. Also why would they kick you out?? University's here are like your decision you show up or not, they don't really care since its YOUR education if you're not serious about it well screw you that's your choice pretty much. Which IMO is how it should be, school shouldn't regulate the attendance in University or college IMO.

There is an university 20 kilometers from where I live, but it is a technical one, which means it only has technical studies... so not useful for me. There is another one slightly closer than the one I go to, but it didn't have any studies I really wanted to do either. So the closest university that has history is the one I go to now. There are only 8 full universities (not technical ones) in the Netherlands, so yes... the chances that you have to travel a lot are pretty high. And I actually only have to be in the train for one hour, but I have to cycle about 20 minutes to the train station and then I have to take the bus to university from Utrecht's train station which currently takes 30 minutes (normally 15, but they are working on the roads). But it is pretty normal to travel that much to university here... And attendance used to be optional, when my father studied at university (he's the only other person in my family who did) he didn't have to come to any colleges but now the right-wing government is totally obsessed with decreasing government spending on education, so they force university to be stricter so they don't have to help people financially who won't come to every lesson. And I don't think you will actually be kicked out, it seems more like a way of scaring us. One of my teachers said that if you get a 0 for a subject because of absence you will have to redo the subject next year... which means you have lots of work to do next year, especially if it happens for more than one subject. But yeah, its stupid that they regulate stuff this way...

Well I guess in like competitive courses where you need certain grades and not everyone gets in forcing attendance is probably a good thing since you're taking away from someone else however if it's not competitive it isn't really needed IMO. Here for university most people just relocate to be near the university
