Hmm, I have already been invited to meet with officials of the local wing of the GreenLeft party, which I previously voted for. Not sure if I will actually be the one to attend, we still have to decide. But it is pretty cool, they are actually part of the coalition in the city in which we are hoping to participate in the municipal elections... They are ideologically very close to my party as well, so maybe this is the beginning of the formation of a new coalition. You could go and start laying the groundwork for a coalition should events turn in their favour

Someone on another forum said me displaying Iwo Jima avatar was disrespectful. Is this some unspoken thing that I'm not aware of?

What's it being disrespectful to? I have no idea why it would be disrespectful honestly, I just didn't know if it was something I was overlooking. Apparently I didn't serve so it is disrespectful I guess. I'm not displaying, "Semper Fi" given I'm not a Marine or anything. So I was curious if I was overlooking something. May have just been him possibly I didn't know.

So I finally got around to watching the last installment of Star Wars. I can honestly say it didn't suck because it at least had an ongoing plot this time. Definitely time to retire the Palpatine chapter though. I thought the best scene was at the end when all the choices of the jedi from past and old reunited to strengthen her, got to admit that was pretty neat. Not to bad but overall time to find a new villain and purpose going forward.

So... it has been an eventful week for me. There is a very severe housing crisis in the Netherlands. Buying a house is considered impossible for people of my generation now and unless you want to pay 800+ euros a month you have to sign-up for a renting organisation and you will be placed in a queue. I only signed-up for some organisations a few months ago, because I had no idea how any of this worked before. It takes about 10 years to make it to the top of the queue currently, and the queues are only getting worse.
But they also have some kind of lottery system for about a third of the houses. The order for the queue there is not based on how long you have been signed-up but it is randomly assigned... probably to give some younger people a bit of hope. I just decided to randomly sign up for a bunch of those. Usually there are 800-2000 people signing up, so the odds are kind of bad. But a few days ago I got placed #2 in the queue for a house in a major city, with three bedrooms. And now it turns out the person that got #1 rejected the renting offer... which means I get to decide whether to take this house or not.
It is a lot earlier than I expected, and kind of random... I have 3 days to decide and if I take the offer I get the keys on the 11th of August. But well, I don't really have a choice... It might take 10+ years to get another chance. So me and my girlfriend (whom I added to my account when I signed-up) are going to be visiting the house this week and then we will decide whether to take it or not... I am a bit nervous/anxious, it is a big step after all, especially since I will go live together with my girlfriend where until now we usually saw each other 2 times a week at the most... but also kind of excited. I think I will probably take the offer if the house is anything like the pictures we saw.
Though we do have to fill in a lot of paper work before Friday, and if we make a mistake they could just take away our offer and give the house to #3. So I am a bit worried we will mess things up, because I don't know anything about tax returns or Municipal Registrations... but we will see.

Jeez, how has this crisis happened in the first place to cause this mess? On the plus side though, potential congrats on the new house. Looks like the peanut keeps on wandering Have you googled for any tips on the paperwork side? It's a combination of insane population density, meaning there isn't much room to build anymore, and a pollution crisis (not the usual climate related one, but poisonous gasses). Basically the entire building industry, which had barely recovered from the 2008 crisis, has been paralyzed because building causes a lot of pollution... and the coalition refuses to take action against excessive farming (the main source of pollution). So basically almost nothing has been build since 2018. Seems like the paperwork was not as complicated as we thought (or I hope so, maybe we missed something). We went to view the house today and it was really kind of surreal to sit in a house and think "I might live here in a few weeks". I have lived in the same house as long as I can remember and a week ago I never expected I would be moving any time soon... yet here we are. I don't know, I was excited but now it also feels kind of bad because of quickly all this is going. But I am sure it will be fine once we move in, and I plan to spend the weekends at my parents house for the foreseeable future (that's what most students do). My main worry is about my parents though, they are going through a divorce and it feels odd to leave them now... and maybe the house we live in now will have to be sold soon so I won't have my old room for 'continuity' purposes. Anyway, the house looked good for its price class (I mean we are students, so it's pretty cheap). And guy that's moving out offered us a bunch of his stuff for a really fair price (like 30 euros for his washing machine). Handing in the last paperwork tomorrow... and then we will see what happens.

But in the US I guess there's a similar situation with not enough houses for everyone wanting to buy. But still congrats and good luck those are some big moves Well the system is only used for 'social renting houses'. Those are basically the lowest price class houses which are kept artificially cheap and are only available for low-income households. Usually the government will pay part of your rent to (like they will be paying 329 euros for us most likely). But because of the housing shortage the rents of all non-social houses have risen extremely fast and buying a house is almost impossible... so everyone that doesn't already own a house or has a lot of money is trying to get one of these houses now. The lottery system is kind of new, but I think they just added that because people signing-up now have to be in a queue for more than a decade so the situation seemed hopeless, now at least there is some hope you get a lottery house. And thanks, they are big moves indeed... perhaps a bit too big for my liking... everything is about to change. But I hope/think it will be for the better...

Whoa, not since 2018? In a way, seeing how small the Netherlands is, I shouldn't be too surprised, but still it's so strange hearing about a country not building. Especially when mine is being new houses left, right and centre, despite the lack of room for them I know how you feel. Although I've always felt excitement at the idea of getting my own house, I get the idea that when it does happen I'll start thinking it's going all to fast as well. However, I think you'll end up enjoying it and it's not so bad seeing how you're going back during the weekends. Sorry to hear your old place might be sold though. Even though my parents rent our house, it would feel so weird not being able to go back to it Jeez, that's an utter steal for a washing machine Have you got a lot of stuff to move into the new place?

Anyone else heard about Scarlet Johansson suing Disney? Honestly, this is some of the best ironic humour I've seen in a while Yeah I'm kinda confused about it. Did she not know the movie would come out on Disney+? Also apparently she already got 20 mil for the role like is that really not enough? There's been a lot of instances about actors turning down roles and whatnot because of money and I get acting is a lot of hard work but often I can't help but think they are just being greedy...

I'm not sure. I'm guessing the contract she signed was for a theatrically released film and it wasn't sort of redone to allow for the partial streaming bit. Yeah, actors are some of the most overpaid folks out there. Don't forget, RDJ was getting up to $50 million a pop for Iron Man, which is just ridiculous. However, greedy or not, I'm not that sympathetic towards Disney. If anything, I kind of hope they lose as it's about time they got taken down a peg. I also heard Emma Stone's weighing her options for suing over her Cruella film too.

Yeah the excitement is winning over the stress and worries again at this point. I did have to cancel my vacation for it though, and my girlfriend is still going away for a few days (in fact she is gone now and won't return until a day after we get the keys). So the timing isn't ideal, it will take a few weeks before we can actually move in. But yeah I am excited now, let's hope things are as fun as they seem they will be... even though they are also going to be expensive... so much stuff we have to buy and without any real income.

Yeah, we need furniture but we have been looking around online and lots of people offer free furniture because it actually costs money to dispose of stuff like that here, so they just want to get rid off it. So I guess that won't be too much of a problem. All the other stuff (like cutlery) is going to be more costly... but I can still borrow money from the government for 2 years as a student... and my parents saved 10.000 for my studies, which I never needed because I kept living at home... so that will help. I can definitely afford it all, but it still feels bad to spent the reserves...

And as s someone who very much likes to save up, I can understand the feeling Do you have a plan on getting income to top up the reserves? Well not from Ebay, most of the stuff comes from outside the EU there which means you have to pay import and delivery fees that surpass the price, so it is rarely worth buying there. But my girlfriend said she found some cutlery package at Ikea for 40 euros, so I suppose we will just get that. And yeah I guess I have to get some income to cover the monthly costs. I can borrow almost 1000 euros a month, which would more than cover the costs, but I would prefer keeping my debts low. I can't work much because I am still in university, but my girlfriend works 16 hours a week and that makes her about 400 euros which covers a significant part of her share of the monthly costs probably. If I do the same that's 800 a month we can use to pay rent and service costs, that should ensure we won't have to borrow too much.
