There's been thunderstorms and lightning almost everyday for the past week or more here. I feel like most people don't really like thunder but I find it kind of cozy being indoors during storms lol I'm envious. We've gone too long without rain  It just doesn't feel natural for a British summer to be this dry Same here. Weirdly enough we had lots of rain like 2 months ago. It got to the points were you could even swim in the streets in some places. Our street flooded as well, there was literal shit floating around our neighbourhood. We got more rain in an hour than we usually do in a month (and the Netherlands get plenty of rain in a month), so that was kind of insane. Then we didn't get any rain for almost 1,5 month. And just yesterday we got another insane rainstorm. I guess the effects of climate change are slowly starting to become visible. The weather has been getting more extreme each year. It has become very noticeable in the last 5 years. The winters are mild, we no longer get snow or ice, we get serious droughts, we had water shortages three years in a row now (the first time was unprecedented), we had some insane storms and even a tornado last year, while the rain used to be spread out quite evenly across the year now we seem to get it in just a few hours per year. The meteorologists here cannot explain it anymore, we are experiencing extremes that are exceeding their worst predictions. The next decades will be interesting in terms of weather... |

Anyone else starting to wish they were on holiday right now?  Still got like 3 weeks before school starts. Wish it was longer though. Going back to school with all the new procedures is gonna suck lol University is still online until February here. Or well, my study is because it is very internationally-oriented, half the students have to come from abroad. And I am kind of glad for that because Amsterdam is the centre of the epidemic here. I don't want to sit in a train with a facemask 3 hours a day just to get infected there anyway. |

Moved into my new apartment yesterday. Place kinda sucks and is overpriced... My last one was overpriced as well but it was a pretty decent place at least
Also I think it's inevitable that our school is going fully online. After they've squeezed the last dollar out of the students of course. So kinda regretting signing a year long lease...

A lot of people on twitter are talking about how their school announced going online/hybrid soon after their tuition payments were due. Coincidentally, that's what just happened at my college. There's been no mention of reducing tuition if things go online, but things are 100% going online. |

It’s cold here, people I work with turn on their heat every morning. Goddammit. The last 2 weeks here were hell. Though, to be fair, you do get used to it. Like I used to physically feel sick whenever temperatures got over 25 Celsius for a few day. Now they have been over 30 for almost 2 weeks and I handled it significantly better. (I still hate it) The last few summers prepared me for this I guess. Though the nights are still terrible... I do not fall asleep easily as it is, but the heat makes everything so much worse. Looks like we are nearing the end of this summer though. Could be worse. Death Valley had the utterly face melting temperature of 56 celsius recently |

Sure wish I could go to another big city... but I doubt that will be an option any time soon. Yeah, I think it's more just missing going abroad. I'd give to be in France again  |

Roughly 40 students present at registration got positive test results just from the initial testing which means the virus has probably spread further by now. I had to drive 1000 miles across the country to get home for classes and clearly shared air space with too many mask-less people... depression... |

Got back into 60s OG Trek. I had started watching TOS a year or two ago but eventually lost interest halfway through. The episodes are pretty long and many are sort of boring or just straight up bad lol. But I'm gonna power through it this time...
I can't really get into any of the other spin offs though (old ones, haven't seen the recent series). No one really compares to the OG Enterprise crew with Kirk, Spock, and Co. for me. Might be because the JJ Abrams movies were my first exposure to the franchise... Speaking of I also decided to get a box set of that trilogy because it's cheap. I know they're not widely regarded as the best movies but I always thought they were a lot of fun lol
It was actually kind of smart of them to make the JJ movies in an alternate universe to not anger the fans if they fucked up the main canon. Too bad they didn't do that for Star Wars.... But the "downside" is that beyond the movies the alternate universe isn't really being utilized at all..

So apparently the first interracial (black and white) kiss on US television was in Star Trek with Kirk and Uhura. The story behind it is NBC(?) execs wanted two cuts of the scene one where they kissed the other where they didn't. But the actors kept fucking up the non kiss scene on purpose so they had to go with the kiss included
Also Uhura's actress was about to quit the show but coincidentally met MLK jr. who convinced her she needed to stay on because of what her presence on the show meant. Some pretty interesting history
Obviously TOS actively aimed to be progressive and tackle the time's societal issues. However I think it's interesting how it doesn't seem annoying or in your face (at least to me) while modern media with its "sjw" stuff is frequently found pretty cringey. I would think people in the 60s felt the same as we do about social commentary pieces. So I wonder what the difference is... Why is one fine and the other not? And again that's only my own perception..

Guy must've had some very unfortunate genes to die like that at such a young age. I mean, what a blindsiding tragedy. I'm getting tired of our government making it up as they go along with this pandemic handling. Originally we went into lockdown and put up all these rules to stop the NHS from being overrun, which didn't happen, but that no they've pretty much evolved the tactics to keeping these rules and local lockdowns to make sure no one ever gets infected at all when the reality is that its threat level here has pretty much disappeared and if some studies are to be believed, its potency for being deadly is weakening now.
You'd think the government's taking advantage of the situation to have a drawn out power fantasy...
