Hondo and the animation are the main things I'm looking forward to with this one.

I honestly don't even remember it that well, but rather just the odd combination of Mace Windu, Jar-Jar, and Talzin all in an arc together.

Well, I watched this. I actually really like certain parts of it, but then there are parts I really don't enjoy... It's going to be interesting deciding how I want to rate these.

The Gathering is much cooler in concept than what we actually got. Seeing Ahsoka in the role of an adviser seemed a little strange after coming off the Onderon arc, but given how different the arcs are, it's not a major issue. I do wish we saw her interact with Yoda some more, even though the episode would've felt more rushed.
Story-wise, the episode is very generic, but that isn't a bad thing. Everything that happens feels right, despite not being super interesting. The plot focuses on younglings, so there's only so much the writers can do to make it engaging. Visually, this episode is stunning. Almost every setting the younglings venture to find their crystal is unique, allowing this episode to boast the animation improvements the show has accomplished since S1.
There's not too much else to say about this one. Based on this episode alone, I don't really like any of the characters, but I appreciate how we are introduced to each. Given Gungi is a Wookie makes him stand out, but it doesn't do much for his actual personality. Having Yoda waiting for them on Illum was an interesting touch that worked well I thought.
Overall, it's a very average episode brought to life by some amazing animation and cool concepts that expand the Star Wars lore. I'll give it a 5.5/10.

Taking what could've been a standalone, A Test of Strength provides an interesting expansion of the story. The majority of this episode is not very exciting, but I do enjoy the beginning and end. Huyang is a neat addition, despite paralleling Ollivander a bit too much initially. However, the process itself keeps my interest, and David Tennant did a nice job of giving a stronger personality to the droid.
Hondo's inclusion in the episode is strange at first, but it works well for the most part. Obtaining the crystals seems pretty risky, but it serves as justification for why he's around. The way the pirates execute their takeover of the Crucible is very convincing and establishes that they are a threat. That is really important, since if Hondo came off as non-menacing, this episode would've been a complete flop for me. Yet given the circumstances and how competent the Ohnaka gang seems overall, it's pretty good.
While the younglings evading the pirates is fine, I still don't really care for any of them enough to enjoy it a lot. Ahsoka's arrival in the final 5 minutes raises the stakes though as she confronts Hondo in an entertaining fight. I also appreciate the Empire reference with Gungi carrying Huyang's head and limbs. A lot of people seem to criticize Hondo for being too evil or bloodthirsty in this episode (or even the arc), but I disagree. He's a pirate most interested in how to make a profit, so it makes sense he can be this sinister. I think what makes it feel odd is that he was presented more amicably in Tipping Points (and Revival, even though it's after this chronologically). So while we see a darker side of Hondo here, I think it's still in character.
Hondo's delivery of lines is great throughout the episode (as usual). I also forgot how cool of a sequence it is when Ahsoka and Hondo are still fighting as the suction of space pulls them out of the ship. It feels very dramatic. The callbacks to the history between Hondo and other characters is something I greatly appreciate throughout the arc, too.
Some parts aren't perfect, but it plays out pretty nicely. I feel a 7.5/10 fits best for this one.

Once again, the story is extended. If Ahsoka hadn't been captured, the arc could've ended as a 2-parter. However, Bound for Rescue provides an intriguing scenario of Ahsoka being held hostage by the Ohnaka gang. Without having seen the next episode, this one feels very cluttered, mainly due to the focus on Kenobi and Grievous. Three plot threads are followed that cause a lot to happen here in only 22 minutes.
Although the Kenobi story does feel a little out of place in terms of how much attention it received, it's a welcome breather from so much focus on the younglings. Grievous appears very formidable alongside his forces, adding to the intensity of the entire battle. I wish we had gotten some more episodes focused primarily on situations like this. My main critique though would be how this largely did feel like a different episode except for Kenobi's brief mentions of the younglings.
Seeing more of the pirates is great, especially since Hondo continues to steal all his scenes. I wonder who he was going to give Ahsoka to though. My thoughts go either to some unestablished character or perhaps Jabba. Regardless, the screen time here is pretty good.
Until the younglings merge back with Ahsoka and Hondo, their part is not fun to follow. By this point, I've come to tolerate most of them, but by no means do I like the characters. They seem a little too well-equipped to handle their situation given how dire it is, but I guess this could still be realistic due to their Force abilities. When they stumble across the circus, it seems like a lazy way to allow them to find Ahsoka, but at least the idea is original. I found the entire performance quite entertaining, but I credit that almost completely to Hondo. His one-liners, dancing, and literally everything else made this part of the episode super engaging.
This episode is tough to rate, since I really enjoy Hondo and, consequently, the circus sequence. Even if the plot is mediocre, he makes Bound for Rescue more fun than it should be. Everything with Kenobi and Grievous is also great, even if it doesn't fit perfectly with the rest. The parts solely with the younglings still drag, but it's not as unbearable as before. I'll go with 7.5/10.

A Necessary Bond wraps up the arc surprisingly well I think. Having Grievous come to Florrum makes his moments from the last episode much more meaningful. It's also an interesting twist to the overarching plot.
The opening chase scene provides a pretty intense atmosphere, even if I still don't care that much about the younglings. I like that despite all their efforts, the pirates still wind up capturing them.
When Grievous arrives before Hondo, it's probably one of his cooler moments on the show. It's a lot of fun seeing the two interact though, especially when Dooku appears via hologram. The fact Dooku still cares so much that Hondo held him hostage is pretty funny. Also neat is that this episode mixes up the formula from that S1 arc by having Hondo now team up with the Jedi to escape the Separatists. I like how this episode addresses Hondo's change in character from A Test in Strength to here. It's quick, but it offers some justification for why he behaves so differently sometimes.
The final chase through the canyons reminds me a little of Lethal Trackdown, which is even cooler when we discover Hondo still owns the Slave I. Even though a minor relationship between Hondo and Katooni is being formed in this episode, it's a little strange that Hondo's encouragement helped her complete her lightsaber, just as Katooni's words influenced Hondo to save Ahsoka and the others.
Ahsoka's clash with Grievous is really good I think and provides a nice contrast to their first encounter from S1. Even though it seemed Grievous was still more powerful, it was a close duel. The final scene of the episode was also handled well, both with Hondo complaining to Kenobi, and the Jedi holding their lightsabers in a circle once their journey officially came to an end.
This is the strongest of the arc I think. 8/10.

Neither this arc or the next one are unwatchable. Nothing in this show is. But there was a lot of frustration in what felt like four part arcs full of filler in what was presumed to be the last season.

And I’m not opposed to more lighthearted or inconsequential episodes. But they should make four part arcs out of them. And especially not two arcs like that in a row.

Parts of this arc and the next are good, but it seemed like a questionable way to spend 40% of S5 when many aspects of them were not very good.

So was this arc intended to be released separately? It wasn't in any of the promotional material for S5, but Ahsoka was still part of the Order, so it needed to be before TWJ and Revival because Hondo references the CIS occupation of Florrum. I know there were rumors it'd be its own movie, but that seemed like a weird idea.

Ok, I keep thinking about it, and I'm going to switch A Test of Strength to 7.5/10 actually. I watched it another time and the parts I thought dragged really weren't that terrible, while the good parts actually seemed better a second time around. I think I'm sticking with this rating.

The Gathering is light and simple but its actually quite an enjoyable episode. The visuals are a very nice aspect. Illum looks great and it really highlights how far the animation has come. The actual story is very predictable but it's actually told quite well. The characters are pretty one-note but they're enough for one episode to lean on. I thought it was cool they put in a Wookiee Jedi.
I'm not sure why they had Ahsoka here. You'd think there would be some Jedi or a few who specialize in training younglings kinda the same way Shaak Ti is often on Kamino. Hell, Yoda probably could've taken them himself. What was he doing anyway, just hanging out on Ilum? Anyway, it's just a bit weird for Ahsoka to be doing this. There's not a whole lot to this one. No huge moments but still cool to see. I say that's enough for a 6.5/10.

A Test of Strength is an episode that nicely ups the ante of the arc. It's a good story if not one that feels all that necessary. It's cool to see lightsabers being built and David Tennant is a nice touch but I won't lie in that I was ready to be done with these kids.
Dark Hondo is a bit jarring to see just two episodes after helping Ahsoka. I found it weird that they used Hondo so much in the first half of five and had his character change several times throughout. I know he's a grey character but it's still odd. Still though, the pirates do feel like a credible threat here and I have to give credit to the show for not playing them off like Saturday morning baddies (even though they technically are).
There are some pretty cool moments here. Ahsoka is at her most badass and I love her line "getting you off of my ship." The kids aren't that great here but Ahsoka and Hondo make this a pretty enjoyable episode. I'll say 7/10.

Bound for Rescue is an odd beast. It's quite silly but there are some dark moments thrown in. I'm not sure exactly how I should react to Hondo selling Ahsoka to a necrophile but before I can think about it we get some funny circus antics.
It's kinda telling that the only part of this arc that made it into the Season 5 trailer was the Negotiator battle, a subplot from the third episode. I almost wish we just had a whole episode of that but well that's all down to marketing. Like the rest of this arc, there aren't too many surprises. The circus is entertaining it's all a little ridiculous and a lot convenient. I didn't mind the Younglings in the first episode. But I definitely tire of them by now. They just aren't good characters and have no business leading four entire episodes.
I don't hate this episode. Hondo is as fun as ever and the brief space battle is very welcome. It just doesn't come together all that well. 6/10.
